Global wood-based solutions manufacturer Finsa has strengthened its commitment to Liverpool City Region with a £20 million investment in a new logistics headquarters at Liverpool City Region Freeport’s Wirral Waters tax site in Birkenhead.
The investment highlights the role Liverpool City Region Freeport is playing in attracting and retaining major business investment, supporting economic growth and creating the conditions for businesses to expand. The new facility will serve as FINSA’s UK headquarters and national distribution centre, strengthening the company’s operations while enhancing the city’s position as a hub for manufacturing, logistics and international trade.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said:
“Finsa’s commitment shows that businesses see a long-term future here in the Liverpool City Region, and our job is to make sure that confidence is rewarded by creating the conditions for businesses to invest and grow, while ensuring local people benefit from the opportunities that investment creates.
“I want the Liverpool City Region to be a place that makes things – a place where businesses can invest, innovate and grow, and where people can build good, secure careers without having to leave the region to find them. Finsa’s investment, alongside our work through the LCR Freeport to support new jobs, strengthen infrastructure and develop skills, is helping us to build that future.”
Spanning 156,000 sq ft, the new facility incorporates a logistics warehouse, a cross-laminated timber (CLT) office building, and the Finsa Home commercial space. The site also features a dedicated dock and a new port crane for direct unloading of vessels.
Having operated in the United Kingdom since 1978 and been based in Merseyside since 1990, Finsa UK generates an annual turnover of approximately £60 million. The company is a key supplier to distributors and manufacturers across the construction and interior design industries.
Official statement:
“This opening marks a decisive milestone for the Finsa Group. Our £20 million investment in Birkenhead reaffirms our long-term commitment to the British market. It demonstrates how responsible private investment contributes to port land regeneration, creates quality jobs and promotes sustainable development alongside our partners and the local community.”
As a result of their investment in their new facility Finsa UK has been able to apply for Freeport Business Rates Relief, which is locally administered and is assessed against the LCR Freeport Gateway Policy which is designed to incentivise growth, as well as attract investment and high-quality jobs to the area from key sector industries.
The project will significantly enhance the company’s cargo handling capacity at Birkenhead Docks, projecting a 23% increase in throughput by 2031 and building upon the foundation of 30 vessels currently received each year. It is expected to safeguard the existing 50 direct and indirect local jobs, contributing to inclusive job growth over the next five years in line with cargo increase forecasts by retaining and growing skilled jobs and local supply chains.
Cllr Paula Basnett, Leader of Wirral Council, said:
“The official opening of Finsa’s new headquarters and distribution center is a significant milestone for both the company and our borough. This £20 million investment is a major vote of confidence in Wirral, safeguarding existing jobs, creating opportunities for future growth and strengthening the important role that Birkenhead Docks plays in our local economy.
“Located within the Wirral Waters Freeport tax site, this development demonstrates what can be achieved when businesses, local government and regional partners work together to unlock investment and support economic growth. It is exactly the kind of high-quality investment we want to see in Wirral, helping to strengthen confidence in our waterfront and create new opportunities for residents and businesses alike.
“Finsa has been part of the Wirral business community for more than 25 years, and it is fantastic to see the company continuing to invest in its future here. This new facility not only strengthens Finsa’s operations but also builds on the momentum we’re seeing across our waterfront, helping to attract further investment and support sustainable growth for years to come.”
